Steel is a metal that is widely used because of its high reliability. We believe that the fight for the preservation of the environment should be based on the same value, which is the foundation of our business.

Great responsibility for great industry

Steel is the basis of heavy industry, whether a product itself or used for parts of production machines/tools for construction, transport, energy, engineering and other sectors. Steel structural elements form the backbone of vehicles, bridges, buildings, pipes, everything without which it is impossible to imagine modern society. However, steel production is a complex and layered process that can be a significant source of pollution, primarily due to emissions of harmful gases and fine particles. The pollution level varies depending on various factors – from the type of technology and the age of the plant to the level of protection legally in force in the country. Environmental protection includes the protection of water, air and soil, the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of natural habitats, and the reduction of pollution and emissions of harmful gases and waste. In order to achieve this, a wide range of consistent and interconnected activities is necessary: environmental monitoring, and development of policies and legal regulations that regulate the production process.

Department for environmental protection

Metalfer is committed to limiting air, water and soil emissions, and reducing noise and waste. Our goal is a thoughtful and rational use of resources and management of facilities with the aim of constantly improving their impact on the environment; For years, our company has been following the latest technological innovations and improving its production process by implementing them. In order to deeply commit to the sustainability of the business, Metalfer introduced a professional Department dedicated to all work that includes environmental protection, and in the last two years, it has grown five times. Some of the daily duties of this department include compliance with defined regulations, proper disposal and classification of generated waste, as well as its delivery to authorized operators. Our employees are also regular visitors to courses related to all segments of environmental protection, and their education in this field contributes to a deeper and more focused operation of the company.

Prioritization of environmental issues

We rely on the principles of the circular economy, which can be seen, among other things, in the example of steel production from electric arc furnaces (EAF). The basic and final raw material for production in the electric arc furnace is steel waste, which we collect, classify and turn into a finished product through processing. The material produced in this way is durable and retains its properties over time. In addition to the operation of electric arc furnaces, we implement our goals by separating and then classifying all other waste materials of production in order to carry out restoration and regeneration efficiently. In this way, waste is reduced, and the possibilities for reuse increase.
Environmental protection is an urgent issue. The planet is faced with numerous challenges: climate change, pollution and the reduction of the green belt are just some of them. In addition to affecting the future of nature, all these circumstances also change society’s health, economy, and stability. Prioritizing environmental issues and taking adequate measures at the Metalfer company is extremely important, which is why business is strictly aligned with regulations, i.e. legal provisions defined at the national and regional levels. All emission parameters are precisely defined through the Integrated Permit (IPPC) document (Link – Integrated Permit), issued by the competent authority, the Novi Sad Provincial Secretariat for Urbanism and Environmental Protection. The environmental management system is aligned with the ISO 14001 standard (Link – ISO 14001) and implemented at different levels due to the decision to improve the environmental protection system. At the same time, the achieved results are closely monitored and considered in the further development of sustainable strategies. Optimum management of facilities is a priority of Metalfera, and we continuously research processes and materials with the aim of more efficient production and reduction of emissions.
