Commitment to Decarbonization and Sustainable Development

The Belgrade Energy Forum 2024, held on May 13-14 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belgrade, once again established itself as a pivotal event in the regional energy sector. Building on the success of the 2023 forum, which gathered over 500 participants from 30 countries, the 2024 edition brought together key stakeholders from the energy industry, including policymakers, energy company executives, leading investors, financial institutions, energy traders, consulting and legal firms, technology manufacturers, and innovative service providers.

Among the notable participants was Metalfer Group, a leading company in the metal industry, represented by its President, Branko Zečević. The forum featured a highly anticipated panel discussion titled “Decarbonization of Industry and Business as a Response to the Green Agenda and CO2 Taxation,” moderated by Ankica Barbulov, Director of Negawatt Solutions.

Focus on Decarbonization and the Green Agenda

The panel discussion provided a platform for in-depth dialogue on the critical challenges and opportunities associated with decarbonizing industrial operations and business activities. Metalfer Group President – Mr. Branko Zečević’s participation underscored Metalfer Group’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to aligning with the Green Agenda. Zečević emphasized the urgency of transitioning to low-carbon technologies and practices to meet the European Union’s ambitious climate targets. He highlighted Metalfer Group’s ongoing initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, including investing in energy-efficient production processes, adopting renewable energy sources, and enhancing waste management practices. By sharing these efforts, Zečević demonstrated how Metalfer Group is positioning itself at the forefront of the industrial sector’s decarbonization journey.

Strategic Insights on CO2 Taxation

The discussion also delved into the implications of CO2 taxation for industries. Zečević articulated the potential financial impacts of carbon taxes on businesses and stressed the importance of integrating these considerations into corporate strategy. He advocated for a collaborative approach between industry leaders and policymakers to develop frameworks that support sustainable economic growth while achieving environmental objectives.

One of the key points raised by Zečević was the impending implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (C-BAM) in 2026. He emphasized that this regulation would require domestic policymakers to establish a legislative framework that protects the local market in a manner similar to how the EU plans to safeguard its own industries under the C-BAM regulation. Zečević urged for proactive measures to ensure that local businesses remain competitive and are not disadvantaged by the new regulatory landscape.

Collaborative Efforts for a Sustainable Future

Zečević’s contributions to the panel were well-received, sparking engaging discussions on the role of innovation and collaboration in driving the energy transition. He called for enhanced cooperation between industry players, government bodies, and research institutions to foster the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies that can significantly lower carbon footprints.

Metalfer Group’s active participation in the Belgrade Energy Forum 2024, particularly in the critical panel on decarbonization, highlights its dedication to leading the charge towards a sustainable and low-carbon future. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Metalfer Group remains committed to implementing robust environmental strategies that not only comply with regulatory requirements but also set new standards for corporate responsibility in the industrial sector.

The Belgrade Energy Forum 2024 proved to be an invaluable opportunity for Metalfer Group to showcase its sustainability initiatives, exchange ideas with industry peers, and reinforce its role as a key player in the regional energy transition.
