Metalfer Group at Belgrade Energy Forum 2025 – A Joint Western Balkans Response to CBAM

As the European Union moves forward with implementing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM), the Western Balkans must not be left unprotected.

Branko Zečević, President of Metalfer Group and representative of the Association of Serbian Energy Intensive Industry, will speak at the Belgrade Energy Forum 2025 about the urgent need for a reciprocal CBAM-like mechanism to safeguard local markets, foster innovation, and preserve industrial competitiveness during Europe’s decarbonization process.

“As Europe enforces carbon responsibility through CBAM, Serbia and the Western Balkans must not remain a regulatory blind spot. Without our own regionally adapted carbon border policy, we risk being overwhelmed by carbon-intensive imports, jeopardizing both our industries and climate goals. Through the Association, we advocate for a regional, coordinated approach – one that ensures a level playing field, accelerates innovation, and positions the Western Balkans as a credible partner in Europe’s green transition. Decarbonization must result from strategy, not be dictated by circumstance,”

said Zečević upon joining the Belgrade Energy Forum 2025.

Meet Branko Zečević, Dimitrije Knjeginjić, and Stanislava Simić at #BEF2025 – the regionally acclaimed conference and exhibition, once again offering a premier networking platform for energy and industry stakeholders.
